Yucca arkansana ssp. louisianensis (TRELEASE?) HOCHSTAETTER, Kaktusbluete, Germany, 16:(16), 25-29, 1999.

Synonyms:
Yucca louisianensis TRELEASE in Rep. Missouri Bot. Gard. 13: 64 , pl. 32-34, (1902 ), in part (BALL 558 and S. 34, fig. 2 ).

Type location: near Alexandria, Arkansas,

Distribution:
East and Central Texas, eastern part of Edward Plateau, Bastrop Co. Southern Arkansas, Northern to Central Louisiana.

Short description of the species:
Like Yucca arkansana, leaves 10 to 40 mm. Inflorescens an excerpted glabrous or mostly pubescent panicle, Scape 50 to 100 cm (or rarely up to 150 cm) starting well above the leaves. Petals broad to attenuate. Style variously tumid and deep green, to pale and oblong. Capsule stout and short, angular in developing, as in Yucca flaccida. Seeds 6-7 x 10 mm.

Hardiness:
I have not tried Yucca arkansana ssp. louisianensis in the garden yet, but in the summer of 2000 I planted one in my unheated greenhouse, in January 2009 is is still looking good, and I will now try another plant in a protected bed. Yucca arkansana ssp. louisianensis are hardy in the Mannheim area Germany.
