Yucca hybrids of 2003

Yucca hybrids,
made in the summer of 2003.

In the summer of 2003 a friend of mine Pia Larsen and I tried to cross pollinate several Yucca species/forms/hybrids with each other. We have been trying to follow the footsteps of great nurserymen such as Carl Sprenger, Willy Müller and Graebner. I have tried pollinating Yucca's before but without getting any fruits with seeds, but then I seem to have learned how to do it. We did cross pollinate the following species and forms:

#49 Yucca flaccida X #1461 Yucca glauca, 14 flowers pollinated = 11 fruits (3 aborted) This hybrid will probably be quite like a hybrid made by Graebner in 1899, which is know as Yucca 'Karlsruhensis' and was described in 1903.

As you can see is the Yucca glauca pollen very good and it is compatible with all the plants that it was tried on. The pollen from #332 Yucca filamentosa was not easy to collect, and also not very good pollen, as many pollinated with that one aborted! It looks like that the flowers of Yucca glauca, may have needed more pollinium, as many of the fruits aborted when they were 10-12 days old, and it looked like they didn't have had pollen enough to pollinate the lower part of the fruit, so it shrunk and led to abortion.

Not all of the above fruits had viable seeds, some of the fruits did not mature probably before the first frost in September, and others were damaged by fungus due to wet weather. One of the plants (#332 Yucca filamentosa) is obviously sterile as non of the fruits were having any viable seeds at all, the pollen from is were OK on some of the plants which it was tried on and it will be the "father" 3 different crosses and 5 seed pods.

I have harvested totally 54 fruits with viable seeds in the fall of 2003. Most of the fruits were ripe when they were 10-12 weeks old, but others were not ripe until after 16 weeks after pollination!

A few plants from the above pollinations were released for sale in June 2006, and more were released in 2008. There will not be offered seeds of the above hybrids!
