Yucca hybrids,
made by
Benny Moeller Jensen
in the summer of 2004.

Also in the summer of 2004, I have made new cross pollination's of several Yuccas. You can also read about the first year of pollination in 2003.

In 2004 I did make cross pollination of the following species, forms or hybrids:

#1581 Yucca 'Elegantissima' X Yucca elata(from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 2 flowers pollinated, = 0 fruits (2 aborted)
#1581 Yucca 'Elegantissima' X #500 Yucca sp. Hybrid?, 2 flowers pollinated = 0 fruits  (2 aborted)
#1581 Yucca 'Elegantissima' X Yucca glauca (from Gurli & Christian Lorentsen), 4 flowers pollinated = 0 fruits (4 aborted).
#1465A Yucca filamentosa X Yucca elata (from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 1 flower pollinated, = 1 fruit (0 aborted)
#1465A Yucca filamentosa X Yucca glauca (from Inger & Mogens Madsen) , 2 flowers pollinated = 0 fruits (2 aborted).
#1465A Yucca filamentosa X Yucca glauca (from Gurli & Christian Lorentsen), 5 flowers pollinated = 3 fruits (2 aborted).
#1465A Yucca filamentosa X Yucca sp. gloriosa ? (BMJ #755) (from Tobias Rasmussen), 1 flower pollinated = 0 fruits (1 aborted).
#1578 Yucca filamentosa X Yucca glauca (from Gurli & Christian Lorentsen), 2 flowers pollinated = 0 fruits (2 aborted).
#1578 Yucca filamentosa X Yucca elata (from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 1 flower pollinated, = 0 fruit (1 aborted)
#1578 Yucca filamentosa X Yucca 'Vittorio Emanuele II' (from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 1 flower pollinated, = 0 fruit (1 aborted)
#49 Yucca flaccida X Yucca elata(from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 1 flower pollinated, = 1 fruit (0 aborted)
#49 Yucca flaccida X Yucca glauca(from Inger & Mogens Madsen) , 2 flowers pollinated = 0 fruits (2 aborted).
#49 Yucca flaccida X Yucca glauca(from Gurli & Christian Lorentsen), 2 flowers pollinated = 1 fruit (1 aborted).
#1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis'  X Yucca elata (from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 4 flowers pollinated, = 2 fruits (2 aborted)
#1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis'  X Yucca 'Vittorio Emanuele II' (from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 2 flowers pollinated, = 0 fruit (2 aborted)
#1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis'  X #500 Yucca sp. Hybrid?, 4 flowers pollinated = 1 fruits  (1 aborted)
#1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis'  X Yucca sp. gloriosa ? (BMJ #755) (from Tobias Rasmussen), 1 flower pollinated = ½ fruit which did abort!.
#500 Yucca sp. Hybrid? X Yucca 'Vittorio Emanuele II' (from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 1 flower pollinated, = 0 fruit (1 aborted)
#500 Yucca sp. Hybrid? X Yucca glauca(from Inger & Mogens Madsen) , 2 flowers pollinated = 0 fruits (2 aborted).
#500 Yucca sp. Hybrid? X Yucca elata(from Inger & Mogens Madsen), 2 flowers pollinated, = 2 fruits (0 aborted)
#500 Yucca sp. Hybrid? X Yucca glauca(from Gurli & Christian Lorentsen), 3 flowers pollinated = 3 fruits (0 aborted).
#500 Yucca sp. Hybrid? X 1581 Yucca 'Elegantissima', 1 flower pollinated = 1 fruits (0 aborted).

Notes to the above:

In the summer of 2004 did I get flowers mailed by post, and I was driving around in the country collection pollen from Yucca glauca, Yucca elata and Yucca 'Vittorio Emanuele II'. The first pollen from the garden of Inger & Mogens Madsen (Yucca 'Vittorio Emanuele II', Yucca glauca and Yucca elata) were collected on a rainy day by Pia Larsen, and none of the pollen did pollinate any plants in my garden, and Pia din not had success pollinating any of Inger & Mogens Madsens's plants that day either. Two weeks later We were visiting them again, and I did collect more pollen from their Yucca elata, the two other plants were unfortunately not in bloom anymore. I was also able to pollinate his Yucca elata, which did get 6 fruits, but only three of those did mature (three did blow of in a storm!), The pollen collected on Gurli and Christian Lorentsen's Yucca glauca were good pollen, but I was unfortunately able to pollinate their Yucca glauca with the pollen that I had collected in my own garden. The reason to this is not known?

Of the 42 pollination's in my own garden, did I get 15 fruits. 12 of the abortions were from pollen collected on a rainy evening! I have collected extra pollen from several plants that I will put in the freezer and try to use next summer on my Yuccas.

Below you can see which pollination's I were able to collect seeds from in 2004:

The fruit were fist ripe on December 25th., and it was pollinated on  August 7th.! This might be a very interesting hybrid, as both parents are very good bloomers.

This is probably the most interesting hybrid that I so far have made. Yucca 'Karlsruhensis type 2' is one of the most hardy Yucca's and Yucca elata is a trunk forming Yucca with an inflorescence which is 4 meter tall! It will be very exciting to follow the seedlings to grow to mature flowering plants. The first specimen bloomed in the summer of 2011.
