Where did I get the plant from:
I have received the plant in 2000 from the late P. C. O. N?rgaard,
Sundby Mors, Denmark, whom got it from, from
Zagrep Botanical Garden. P.C.O. N?rgaard did grow the plant under the name
Yucca karlsruhensis type 2!
Short description:
Plant acaulescent with one or several rosettes, forming new
rosettes from short rhizomes.
Leaves: dark green with a bluish bloom,
up to 45 cm long, 14 to 18 mm wide around the middle, many fibers at the
margin of the leaves. Inflorescence: pubescent, paniculate, 100
cm high, with a few short branches up to 10 to 13 cm long, the branches
are held in an upright angle. Scape: up to 45 cm cm held above
the leaves.
Flowers: campanulate (bell shaped).
Fruit the young fruit
is purple and very pubescent, 25 mm thick and 40 mm long. Seeds:
not known at the time of writing. Flowering time: (in Denmark) late
July to mid August.
Where do I grow the plant:
In a raised well drained bed.
Hardiness:
So far it has been very hardy, it does not show any damage after the
winters. It has been in cultivation in northern Europe for decades, I do
not know for how many years it has been grown in Denmark.
Notes:
This plant is one of the most sought after Yucca hybrids in Europe.
Succulent
Tissue Culture in The Netherlands, has
tried to propagate it, but they unfortunately failed, I will send new material
when possible for a new trial.
Other notes:
In August 2004 I did cross pollinate the plant with pollen from other
Yuccas:
# 1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis' X Yucca elata (from Inger
? Mogens Madsen), 4 flowers pollinated, = 2 fruits (2 aborted).
# 1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis' X Yucca 'Vittorio Emanuele
II' (from Inger ? Mogens Madsen), 2 flowers pollinated, = 0 fruits
(2 aborted).
# 1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis' X #500
Yucca
sp. Hybrid?, 4 flowers pollinated = 1 fruits (3 aborted).
# 1454 Yucca 'Karlsruhensis' X
Yucca sp.
gloriosa
? (BMJ #755) (from Tobias Rasmussen), 1 flower pollinated = 0 fruit (1
aborted).
It will be very interesting to see the outcome of the new hybrids, but I do not expect flowers in the new hybrid until 2010 at the earliest!
I now grow the following of the above in the garden or in pots:
1999 Yucca "Jensen hybrid"
(Yucca 'Karlsruhensis type 2' x Yucca hybrid #500),
s2007, (BMJ # 1454 x 500)
2000 Yucca "Jensen hybrid"
(Yucca 'Karlsruhensis type 2' x Yucca elata),
s2007, (BMJ # 1454 x pollen from Mogens Madsen)
2001 Yucca "Jensen hybrid"
(Yucca 'Karlsruhensis type 2' x Yucca elata),
s2007, (BMJ # 1454 x pollen from Mogens Madsen)
